Good food makes us feel good. As far as I'm concerned, that's the main requirement. Taste is important, obviously. If it's healthy, that's a bonus. Connecting with people or experiences by sharing food can transform simple food into something wonderful.
Bad food makes us feel badly. It can taste badly or be unhealthy. But if it is connected with a negative event or uninteresting people, even good food can be ruined. Experience is the key to the relative goodness or badness of food.
Food enjoyment is at the core of my mental health. My day can be made or ruined based on what I'm eating and with whom. For better or worse, that's how I'm built. I love to cook and have often referred to cooking as my Yoga. When I am in the zone I can prepare three meals simultaneously. And I gain serenity from the process of making good food. Food and cooking are also my therapist's office. When I'm feeling down or out, I can often lift myself up simply by focusing on creating something in the kitchen.
Sharing food is also the way I care for loved ones in need. When I can see that my friends are hurting or overwhelmed, offering to bring them food is a real and specific way that I can feel useful and offer care. Everyone needs to eat. And I also have no problem asking for people to bring me food or meet me for a bite when I need a bit of care.
I know that not everyone shares my single minded belief that food is a vehicle for joy. And that's fine. My love for all things good about food is personal but something that is made measurably more pleasant by sharing it with like minded souls. I'm grateful for the multitudes of you in my life. A life filled with good food and wonderful people. How can that be wrong?
